Big Newspaper but no e-mail

Dear excursioners, dear friends,

As some of you might know, I had the opportunity to do my job shadowing at the Liverpool Daily Post. You might have heard of it before, right? Well, the Liverpool Daily Post is the biggest local newspaper for Liverpool and the area around the city. Maybe that is why I didn’t put much hope in being offered the chance to visit the people who work there. And to be honest, the hardest thing about getting there was to send my application. The reason: the Liverpool Daily Post has no email address you can send an application to. I am not kidding. I tried everything to find out such an email address and I wasn’t the only one. Tom helped me and he was as confused as me when we both found out that such a big newspaper is email-less. Funny, isn’t it?! Well, then we decided to send a “real” letter to the editor. And I really could not believe it when I received an answer just two weeks later. To all of you who did a job shadowing: Did you get an answer earlier? I think that this was a very quick answer.

To tell you about my day, well, it was not really a day. Mr Chris Walker, the assistant editor of the newspaper and the person who wrote me back, invited me to call in for a chat at 12 noon on Friday. I stayed there at a big office for about an hour. He introduced me to some of the people who were all very busy ;). Then I could ask him questions about the newspaper and we talked about the future of printed media which is in strong competition with all the online newspapers. He told me about when he worked as a journalist before and about his way to the Liverpool Daily Post. Have you ever heard of the Liverpool Echo? Both newspapers belong together; you can buy the Daily Post in the morning and the Echo in the evening. Actually I didn’t know that before.

All in all, this was a very pleasant and informative meeting. As Mr Walker is a kind and friendly person who was interested in my studies and what we were doing during our stay in Liverpool, this was a successful visit. It is definitely one of my highlights of our Liverpool Excursion. I hope you had such interesting experiences too.

With best wishes--

Yours,

Kristina
